Club History

Westerham Bowls Club, co-founded by John Allen Hughes Esquire in 1906, had its first match against Sevenoaks at the club’s original location behind the Kings Arms Hotel in Westerham High Street. The green was not quite full size, but it proved adequate for the first 14 playing years. Problems arose however when Kings Arms customers placed tables and chairs on the green to enjoy their drinks outside. When the club joined the Sevenoaks League, it needed to move to find a larger green to meet the leagues requirements. It was 1920, and a suitable plot of land was provided by the then club president, at the corner of Hosey Hill and Brasted Road. In the late forties he moved away from the area and in 1949 the club moved its original ‘pavilion’ to the Costells Meadow site. In 1980, club members dismantled a surplus Social Services office building in Bromley North, transported it to its current site and created the
clubhouse we currently have. After over a 117 years of Bowling enjoyment, we at the club hope that you will join and help us progress towards the future.

Why not come and join us?

We are open to any person who wishes to take up the sport of Lawn Bowls or to just simply enjoy life through a comprehensive social agenda.

Our outdoor season begins late April and ends late September with friendly matches played against other local clubs throughout the year. The club is represented in the West and North-West Kent Leagues by the ladies and the Sevenoaks and District League by the men, together with other local district competitions. Also, don’t forget those challenging internal competitions pitching member against member.

Together with the Bowls we have a fully stocked bar, organised BBQs as well as a fully inclusive social programme throughout the year, including the close season, with Quizzes, Whist and Short Mat Bowls etc.
So, whether you like the challenge of competition, the aspiration for Bowls perfection or just the friendly banter of a relaxing roll-up on the green, please get in touch and join us in a very picturesque part of Kent.
